Create thin volumes

A storage volume is an identifiable unit of data storage. Storage groups are sets of volumes.

Prerequisites

See Roles and associated permissions to determine the user roles that can perform this task.

Steps

  1. Select the storage system.
  2. Select Storage > Volumes and click Create.
  3. Select TDEV or BCV+TDEV as the Configuration.
  4. Select the Emulation type.
The emulation type CKD-3380 is not applicable for storage systems running PowerMaxOS 10 (6079).
  5. Specify the capacity by typing the Number of Volumes, and selecting a Volume Capacity. You can also manually enter a volume capacity.
    NOTE:

In 10.1.0.0, there has been a change in the rounding of GB/TB/MB to cylinders when creating or expanding a volume. Creating or expanding a volume in TB/GB/MB in some scenarios results in a volume slightly smaller or slightly larger than if you had created the same size volume in TB/GB/MB in release 10.0, for example, creating a 2TB vol is 1118481 Cyl in 10.1.0.0 , but in 10.0 a 2TB vol is 1118482 Cyl).

If you want to create a volume in 10.1.0.0 and need to guarantee that it exactly matches the size of a volume that was created using 10.0, you must specify the volume size in Cylinders and not TB/GB/MB when creating or expanding.

  6. Optional: To add the volumes to a storage group, click Select, select the storage group, and then click OK.
  7. Click Advanced Options to set the advanced options:
    • Type a value for Start Volume Number (a custom starting device number from which you would like volume numbers to begin). There is no guarantee that device numbers are available when creating volumes. By the time you have entered the custom starting volume number, entered the volume details, and invoked the execution of the operation, another user or host may have created volumes that used that starting number and the operation fails.
    • Optional: Click the Enable Mobility ID checkbox to assign Mobility IDs to the volume. If you leave the checkbox clear, a Compatibility ID is assigned to the volume instead.
    • If you are creating a volume that is not being added to a storage group, and you specify to Allocate Full Volume Capacity, the Persist preallocated capacity through reclaim or copy flag is also set automatically and is disabled (cannot be changed). If you are creating a volume that is being added to a storage group that has data reduction enabled, Allocate Full Volume Capacity and Persist preallocated capacity through reclaim or copy are not allowed and are disabled. If you are creating a volume that is being added to a storage group that has data reduction disabled, you can select Allocate Full Volume Capacity and optionally select Persist preallocated capacity through reclaim or copy.
    • To name the new volumes, select one of the following Volume Identifiers and type a Name:
      • None—Allows the system to name the volumes (Default).
      • Name Only—All volumes have the same name.
      • Name + VolumeID—All volumes have the same name with a unique volume ID appended to them. When using this option, the maximum number of characters that are allowed is 50.
      • Name + Append Number—All volumes have the same name with a unique decimal suffix appended to them. The suffix starts with the value that is specified for the Append Number and increment by 1 for each additional volume. Valid Append Numbers must be from 0 to 1000000. The maximum number of characters that are allowed is 50.
For more information about naming volumes, see Set volume names.
  8. Do one of the following:
    • Click Run Now to perform the operation now.
    • Expand Run Now and click Add to Job List to add this task to the job list, from which you can schedule or run the task at your convenience. For more information, see Schedule jobs and Preview jobs.
